the divisions

Upon being accepted onto the Theorem of the Astral Rose, Wayfarers are encouraged to pick a Division that they feel they are best suited to. The five crew Divisions are Security, Research & Archives, Medical, Science & Engineering, and Support. When they pick their Division, they are outfitted with the appropriate tools and technology of their chosen trade.
Sometimes, while exploring a planet, the Hosts will survey the local lands and culture and come up with suggestions for what each Division should do. These are not regarded as official orders, so Wayfarers are free to follow these suggestions or not.
There are countless dangers to be encountered whenever one explores a planet outside of known Allied space. Dangerous animals and overly aggressive locals are just the beginning of potential dangers— there are also natural disasters to consider, poisonous plants, tempestuous and fragile geography, weather events, and even other explorers. Those in the SECURITY division must analyze and plan for every danger to the exploratory expedition.
In aid of protecting the expedition, each Security personnel is equipped with the following:
(1) Standard Pulse Rifle: A staple of security and crowd control around the universe, the Pulse Rifle is a basic energy weapon capable of discharging at three different energy levels: a temporary stun, a few minutes of paralysis, and a jolt that will knock out most creatures for about half an hour.
(2) Basic Restraints: Electronic cuffs that can stretch and twist to suit just about any wrist or ankle, these are keyed to the Security personnel's biometrics and can only be released by them.
(1) Standard Field Dressing Kit: For when an expedition member is injured and Security personnel need to stabilize them before Medical gets there, this field dressing kit contains nano-bandages that adjust and secure themselves, medi-gel gauze, and an extendable splint to hold broken bones in place.
(1) Enviro-Scanner: To keep informed about the local geography, weather patterns, and poisonous flora. The enviro-scanner cannot provide exact answers about alien biology and weather until further study, but it can provide its best guess based on existing science, which is largely accurate, if missing details.
Wherever one travels in the universe, there will always be curious minds who want to study the hows and whys behind everything. In this mission, as Wayfarers touch down on distant planets, Science and Engineering personnel will often be the first on-planet — after Security makes sure everything is relatively safe, of course. It is this Division's job to study the natural and manmade creations on these planets, whether they be a strange new animal that feeds on helium gas, or a new type of architecture made by local sentients, or as-of-yet-unseen chemical elements.
For their missions, Science & Engineering crew are provided with the following technology:
(1) Enviro-Scanner: To keep informed about the local geography, weather patterns, and poisonous flora. The enviro-scanner cannot provide exact answers about alien biology and weather until further study, but it can provide its best guess based on existing science, which is largely accurate, if missing details.
(1) Field Testing Kit: With a myriad of flora and fauna, soil types, metals, rocks, waters, and everything else to study, the field testing kit provides an easy way to analyze the chemical composition of whatever it scans.
(1) Multi-tool: Has just about every small tool an engineer could possibly need: screwdrivers, mini saws, pliers, scissors, small engraving laser, magnifier, even a nail file.
Medical staff are the backbone of any long-term exploration expedition, and some of the hardest working staff available. Their primary mission is twofold: to tend to emergency illnesses and injuries as a result of exploration, but also to keep their crew healthy and fit with check-ups, long-term condition management, disability support, and wellness advice. Medical personnel aboard the Theorem will find themselves facing constant mysteries, from bizarre alien pathogens to the accidental ingestion of alien plants.
In aid of serving the crew, Medical Division personnel are provided with the following technology:
(1) Bio-Scanner: A small portable device that can do the work of just about every type of medical scan available, all while providing the visual results as an interactive hologram. The bio-scanner can even do blood tests without needing to access a vein. Its weakness, however, is that it was trained on regular humanoids and other species familiar to this universe: unusual specimens may be harder to scan and test.
(1) Dermal Injector: A cutting-edge medical device capable of delivering medication through mere contact with the skin; no needles necessary.
(1) Standard Field Kit: In the event of medical emergencies in the field, Medical personnel are provided a kit to stabilize patients until they can be moved back into the Theorem's medbay. This includes nano-bandages that adjust and secure themselves, medi-gel gauze, and an extendable splint to hold broken bones in place.
On every new planet, there exists the chance that Wayfarers will encounter a new alien species. And most species manage to figure out some form of history keeping: oral tradition, writing, art, and more. One of the jobs of Research & Archives is to make detailed records on the culture and history of every new alien species they come across, carefully making copies of their history to preserve it for study, and for others to read and enjoy.
Another job of theirs is to collect every story about the Edicts that they come across. As enigmatic entities, the Ascendents want more information on the Edicts, and even cultures that have never heard of them might have been affected by them in some way.
Essentially, if you like burying yourself in data and books, this is the Division for you!
All Research & Archives personnel are given the following technology:
(1) Multi-scanner: A tool capable of taking detailed holographic recordings of everything it is pointed at, as well as transcribing writing into electronic data.
(1) Multi-tool: Has just about every small tool an engineer could possibly need: screwdrivers, mini saws, pliers, scissors, small engraving laser, magnifier, even a nail file.
(1) Miniature stasis shield generator: In order to preserve those really fragile paper pages, or cave art that's on the verge of fading. Projects a stasis field that even microbes cannot enter.
Perhaps the most important of all the Divisions, Support are the people that keep the ship running. They are the chefs, the cleaners, the ship's engineers, the pilots, the diplomats, and any other miscellaneous job that does not fit into the other four Divisions.
Truly, where in the universe would we be without those working tirelessly in the background to maintain all of the systems that keep us alive, happy, healthy, and fed?
As Support personnel can fit into any number of roles, they are given some of the same basic technology as other Divisions, and may be given extra tools depending on their job.
